Flute

   
 

Born near Chicago/USA 1957, lives in Essen/Germany, studied flute among others with Alexander Murray and composition with Herbert Brün at the University of Illinois, graduated in 1984 as Master of Music and was thereafter active as a flute instructor and performer. She settled in Germany in 1990 after making a tour of the German speaking countries with an American ensemble for new music. In 1998 she carned the Doctor of Musical Arts with a dissertation on the pedagogy of contemporary flute music.
Ms. Olson has specialized in various aspects of contemporary music, including new sound possibilities on the flute, graphic notation and improvisation, interaction with computers and electronics, and the pedagogy of modern music.
She has toured both as soloist and as a member of various ensembles through the USA, South America, Canada, Japan, Germany, Holland and Switzerland. In addition she has produced several recordings for radio and CD. She was the grantee of supporting fund from the Zippel Stiftung for a CD production of music for flute and percussion (AufRuhr Records 1995), and a CD with her own compositions for flute was released in 1996 by NURNICHTNUR.
In 1992 she was the co-founder of the WOLPE TRIO with cellist Scott Roller and pianist Susanne Achilles. This group has presented numerous premiere performances of new works and has appeared at major European festivals and in concerts in the USA. A CD was produced with the generous support of the Stiftung Kunst und Kultur NRW as well as the Wolpe Society New York and is available on the cybele label.
Ms. Olson concertizes frequently with other artists and ensembles, such as the percussionist Stephan Froleyks, the Schreck Ensemble of Amsterdam (live/computer interaction), the flute quartet Kalais and others.
She conceptualized and realized an exhibition of modern music notation forms (in cooperation with Smith Publications/USA) and an accompanying concert series for the programmed side events of the documenta IX 1992 in Kassel. In the same year she led a seminar on graphic notation in modern music at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen. Since 1996 she has organized and taken part in several instruction-teams for the Response composition project with music students in public schools (supported by the Cultural Ministry of the State of Hessen). She helped organize the festival for contemporary music and art Open Systems 1997 which took place in several cities of the Ruhr Area. She has been on the board of directors of the Gesellschaft für Neue Musik Ruhr (regional chapter of the ISCM) since 1996.
Since 1990 she has been teaching flute and various topics related to modern music at the Gesamthochschule/Universität Kassel.
